Malignaggi Fight Cancelled : Danny to Fight Chris Gilbert this Saturday at Agganis Arena
Boston-area fans will be treated to fireworks this Memorial Day weekend as a full slate of exciting fights come to Agganis Arena on Saturday, May 23. The action is highlighted by Boston’s own Danny O’Connor (25-2, 9 KOs) taking on the fighting pride of Vermont, Chris Gilbert (13-1, 10 KOs) in an eight-round welterweight battle for the New England welterweight championship title.
Danny O’Connor, the most popular fighter in New England will look to pick apart the hard-charging Gilbert. The bout for the New England Welterweight Championship will be the final event of the evening and close down the show in spectacular fashion at Agganis Arena. O’Connor the man credited with putting Boston boxing back on the map, figures to have many of his loyal fans in attendance, creating the raucous atmosphere Danny O fights have come to be known for.
A former National Golden Gloves champion who has fought as a pro since 2008, O’Connor was set to face former two-division champion Paulie Malignaggi, but after Malignaggi had to pull out of the fight with an injury, O’Connor wasted little time in setting the fight New England fans have longed to see and will now return home for the May 23 bout. The 30-year-old out of Framingham, Massachusetts is coming off of back-to-back knockout victories over Michael Clark and Andrew Farmer and looks to leave a big impression on his hometown fans.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to fight Chris in Boston,” said O’Connor. “Being able to do what I love in front of my hometown fans that have supported me since day one is very meaningful to me”
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to fight on such an amazing card,” said Gilbert. “I’m coming off a first round knockout last week and I plan to bring the same intensity, aggressiveness and hard hitting style into the ring this week. O'Connor has been at the top of the welterweight division, whether in the amateurs or pros, and I’m excited to see how my skills compare.”
“This is a fight that local fight fans have been eager to see for a long time,” said Ken Casey, President of Murphys Boxing. “New England’s premiere welterweight versus New England’s hardest hitting welterweight. Pride can be worth more than money sometimes and the right to call yourself ‘New England welterweight’ champ is very important to a fighter in this close knit community.”
The undercard will also feature a highly anticipated 10-round middleweight contest for the NABA Championship that pits Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (20-1, 13 KOs) against Melvin Betancourt (29-1, 23 KOs) as both men look to prove themselves as contenders in the division. With the NABA Championship on the line and a certain top 10 WBA ranking, a win here puts Spike in the picture for a future WBA title fight.
A resident of Cork, Ireland, O’Sullivan will be fighting for the fifth time as a professional in the state of Massachusetts, where he is yet to lose. At 30-years-old, he has won his last four fights since a defeat to Billy Joe Saunders in 2013, including three straight by knockout. He will take on a strong opponent making his U.S. debut in Betancourt. The fighter out of Villa Gonzalez, Dominican Republic has won nine fights in a row. This has all the making of an all out war.
Also on the card will be Undefeated Logan McGuinness (22-0-1, 10KOs). Fighting out of Ontario, Canada, McGuinness will make his second start in the U.S. after debuting in April with a first round TKO over Carlos Fulgencio at Memorial Hall in Massachusetts. The 27-year-old will take on 35-year-old Cuevas out of Mexico City. Logan looks to continue to excite the fans in his adopted fighting home of Boston and keep his World Championship aspirations on track.
These fights will support the Premier Boxing Champions on NBC show featuring the super middleweight showdown between Olympic medalists Andre Dirrell (24-1, 16 KOs) and James DeGale (20-1, 14 KOs) and former title challenger Edwin Rodriguez (26-1, 17 KOs) taking on the undefeated Craig Baker (16-0, 12 KOs).
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Murphys Boxing, are priced at $250, $200, $100, $75, $50 and $35, not including applicable service charges and taxes, and are on sale now. I'm just excited to get back in the ring. I know Clark is a tough fight, so I'll be ready”, said O'Connor. With a title shot within reach, The City of Melrose is in for a treat when O’Connor takes to the ring.
With the response from the inaugural Memorial Series, Part 2 set to take place April 10th, is already creating buzz. "The most popular fighter in New England fighting in such an intimate venue Memorial Hall is a once in a lifetime thing. We are very grateful to Danny...he always loves to support a great cause", said Ken Casey of Murphys Boxing. "Our 1st Memorial Series was a sell out and we couldn't keep up with ticket demand. The response from the City of Melrose and surrounding cities was huge. Now with Danny O on the card and his crazy Clan O'Connor fans, the demand will be insane. I would suggest getting your tickets as soon as you can, because they won't last", added Casey.

Danny Defeats Andrew Farmer in 4th Round KO!!!
Returning after a year layoff, Danny improved to 24-2 (8ko’s) with a 4th round stoppage of Virginia’s Andrew Farmer, 18-3 (7). Farmer looked relaxed and confident entering the ring, despite the strong O’Connor crowd lead by bagpipes and drums, but O’Connor’s slick southpaw style, sharp accurate jab, and thumping body shots seemed to have Farmer perplexed from the first round on. A right hook counter opened a stubborn cut over Farmer’s left eye in the third round, and the continued pressure by O’Connor, kept it open throughout the fight. A sharp uppercut to the body put Farmer down to one knee in the fourth, where he remained for the count.

(FTE) charity event, popular welterweight Danny “Bhoy” O’Connor (23-1, 7 KOs) turned in a workmanlike performance for his ninth straight victory, recording a unanimous eight-round decision over Texas invader Raul Tover (11-8-1, 4 KOs) in tonight’s main event, at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.
O’Connor, fighting out of Framingham, Massachusetts, was a 2008 US Olympic Team alternate. The popular Irish-American southpaw, co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Warriors Boxing, avenged a loss to Tover in the 2005 National PAL Tournament in Oxnard, California.
Now 5-0 (4 KOs) in the FTE, O’Connor easily won on all three judges’ scorcards: 80-73, 79-37, 79-73.
“As I progress in my career,” the 28-year-old O’Connor said, “further and further along, it’s nice to stop and reflect. I made my pro debut here and fought five times in the Fight To Educate. I know the commission, people of Manchester, even the hotel where we stay and the drive to the arena. I have a sense of security here. Hopefully, I’ll have to chance to fight here again next year, and someday maybe I’ll be lucky enough to bring a world title belt here.
“I’m trying to be the most active fighter in this sport (this was his third fight in less than two months). I don’t want to have to get ready when that big call comes, I want to be ready, so that I’m staying active and living a good lifestyle. I’m gaining experience and need that to realize my goal and personal dream.
“I’d been fighting at 140 pounds since I was 15 and it became too hard. I’m a welterweight now and I feel stronger at 147. I could have fought 15 rounds tonight the way I feel. I hired a fight nutritionist. I felt great at the weigh in, during the fight, and even now.”
Hard-hitting Vermont light middleweight Chris Gilbert (10-0, 7 KOs), fighting in his third consecutive FTE, dropped Anthony “The Candyman” Chase (11-2, 4 KOs) three times in the second round, and finished off the Providence fighter in third with a right uppercut to remain undefeated.
Maine light welterweight Brandon “Cannon” Berry (3-0) remained undefeated the hard way as Jesus Javier Cintron (1-4-2) was disqualified in the round for repeated low blows.
Fight To Educate, presented in part this year by Alrich Cabinet, is a unique charity event that combines a love of sports with the vision of assisting children and seniors in need, who with fundraisers like this could be ‘down for the count.’ During the past 11 years, Fight To Educate has raised more than $500,000 in donations benefitting local New Hampshire non-profit organizations.
Proceeds from the 12th annual Fight To Educate benefitted SEE Science Center (www.see-sciencecenter.org), The Bobby Stephens Fund for Education (www.stepheneducationfund.com), and New Horizons for New Hampshire.
This year’s attending Boxing Legends were Aaron “Hawk” Pryor, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and “Dangerous” Dana Rosenblatt.
Danny looks to capture his 23rd victory when he takes on 11-7-1 Raul Tover on Sept 12, 2013 at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, NH. Come watch and cheer on Danny "Bhoy" O'Connor as he seeks revenge against Welterweight gatekeeper Raul Tover...a man who handed him one of his few defeats as an amateur. On the card as a co-feature is the exciting and undefeated Chris Gilbert (9-0). The bouts will be part of the Fight To Educate fund raising event. Tickets will be $25 and $50 with ringside tables available for $1000 for 8 seats and dinner is included. Ticket information coming soon. He explains, "Danny is the genuine article. He has a highly decorated amateur pedigree, a blue collar mentality, and the required desire to make it to the top. I’m also confident he will serve as a great ambassador for the Boston area as well as the sport of boxing. Myself and my band mates plan to work hard to see that he is in the very best position to be successful."
With ambitions of fighting in Boston landmarks such as Fenway Park and the Boston Garden, the goal is to make O’Connor and the sport of boxing a prominent fixture in the city’s sports landscape. O’Connor reveals his excitement for the future, "Being associated with the Dropkick Murphys is a dream come true for a local kid. As a working class Irish American fighter from the Boston area, the relationship is a natural fit. I know nothing was ever given to them and they went out and earned every fan one at a time. As a fighter you have to have that same approach. Dropkicks provide a way to grow my popularity all while staying true to my morals and values. I wear Boston pride on my sleeve and I’m ready to show the world."
The newly formed relationship will surely transcend the traditional boxing enthusiast and galvanize the regions sports crazed culture as well as all the Murphy diehards. Casey reveals, "We envision a Danny O fight to be an extension of a Dropkick Murphys concert. A real cast of characters...fight enthusiasts and loyal Boston sports fans to soccer hooligans and punk rockers all uniting to cheer on Danny." O’Connor’s goals for 2012 are to move closer to a world title shot, expand his fan base, and make a lasting impression on the boxing world. He is currently training hard in Houston, Texas under the watchful eye of renowned trainer Ronnie Shields. O’Connor’s next fight will take place May 24th at the House of Blues on Lansdowne Street in Boston, Massachusetts as he headlines a Boston versus New York themed boxing card. The event will be the first professional boxing promotion at the House of Blues and will also include a full night of live music.
